If the ice maker in a freezer is either spilling water or is completely frozen and blocked, there may be a leak in the ice maker tray. Try these troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue!
First fully remove the ice maker tray. You may find multiple ice cubes that have frozen into a solid ice block. This may be caused by a leak in the tray or an overflow when the tray is filled.
Unscrew and remove the ice maker from the side of the freezer. Be sure to either turn off the ice maker with the on/off switch or, depending on the model, by unplugging the ice maker from the refrigerator. Once removed, you can look into the ice maker and may observe some damage on the inside caused by hard water or a leak. Alternately you may see a damaged or worn away seal.
To test for a leak, hold the tray level over a sink and fill with water. No water should come out of the tray - any water, including a drip, indicates that there is a leak in the tray. The tray will need to be replaced - be sure to compare the cost of repair/replacement with the cost of the unit to take the most cost-effective, resident-friendly option. If you are not able to find the exact ice tray replacement, you may be able to use a similar model as long as the connections are compatible. Double check the user manual for the refrigerator.
